When I opened Netflix today, an ad for a new show appeared called Black summer. He is described as âThe dead are alive. Predators, prey. When there is nowhere to hide, you can learn to survive. And who you can trust. Being a huge fan of zombies in a world of many boring zombie shows, I was a little worried about this. But seeing the short preview with Jaime King leading the way, I decided to give it a go, and was pleasantly surprised.
Black summer is by far one of the most original versions of zombie fiction since 2007 28 weeks later and 2004 Dawn of the Dead. After several intrigues that intertwine somewhat, the show focuses on people and how they would react during a zombie outbreak. Not everyone can unite, and not all heroes’ decisions are good. From people offering to âsuck your cockâ for a ride to leaving your girlfriend behind and turning into a zombie, the series looks at people from a perspective of doing whatever it takes to survive. With fast zombies you don’t have time to think and chat like in The walking dead and its walkers. You have to make split-second decisions that can lead to the deaths of the people you just got together with.
While some have compared it to the show Z-Nation since both are from Asylum, this series is different in every way. It has no comedy level and is suspenseful horror with tons of gruesome deaths including biting scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat. What separates this show is the amazing camera work with some unique shots that reminded me of the best scenes on Netflix daredevil while focusing more on quick stories of people. Even if you don’t get to know each person, you care about their survival. And like The Walking Dead, there isn’t much of an explanation as to why the zombies are there or what caused them.
Black Summer has quickly become the show that every zombie fan wants. Multiple tales of survival, heroism, fear and moral crossroads fill this show from start to finish. While not classic and structurally sound, it is a fun, anxiety-filled roller coaster that will make you want more.
